Purchasing Auto Insurance: what you need to know
Car Insurance is one of the most popular types of insurance. Most adults have a car or other vehicle, and given the speeds they move, even a minor accident can lead to costly repairs, and expensive legal liabilities if someone sustains an injury. When purchasing auto insurance you will want to do some shopping around to ensure you get the best deals. Car insurance can be very expensive, particularly for younger drivers or those with a history of traffic offences.
There are a number of factors that can affect the cost of your vehicle insurance - age of driver, amount of use, location, type of vehicle and a host of others - one fact remains the same however: The best way to get cheaper auto insurance is to do a little shopping around. Comparing quotes and looking for special offers is the single most effective way to keep your premiums down.

Why Insurance rates vary between providers
There's a large number of factors that affect the price of your insurance, and each insurer places a different weighting on each of them. As a result different insurers will deliver different premiums for each customer. Progressive (purely for the sake of argument) for example may place a higher weighting on the likelihood of theft, while Geico may place a bigger emphasis on the age, gender or driving record of the driver. Why do insurers weight premiums differently? Generally because their claims history has shown that different types of claims, and different types of people account for more claims, or more total costs. In the Progressive example, they may have found that theft claims occur less often, but cost them a great deal more when they do occur and thus account for a larger proportion of their total claims cost. Likewise Geico may have found that collision claims and third party liability are a much bigger issue for them in terms of claims exposure. As a result they charge different premiums depending on the specifics of the person applying.
If you're insuring a vehicle that is a common target for theives, and you have a good driving record, the Geico (for exaample) may offer you a better overall premium, but if your driving record is a little less than perfect, Progressive may work out cheaper. This is why it's so important to shop around and get muliple quotes. Simply put, insurers charge different based on their experience, and depending on who you are, what you drive and your history some may consider you a better risk than others. Almost all USA states have minimum Auto insurance requirements, and failing to have insurance is an offence, so auto insurance is a mandatory fact of life if you drive a car, but that doesn't mean you have to accept high premiums.
